The Science Programming Team (SPT) consists of a network of scientific software engineers located in various countries. All members share a passion for computer programming and science.
The diverse backgrounds of our developers complement each other and together we can solve just about any scientific programming problem.
Below are the biographies of Tom and John - the guys who manage the operations of the SPT.
Tom Haller, PhD - Team Leader
Dr. Tom Haller received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2001 from the University of
Illinois, U-C, IL, USA. He did his post doctoral work at MIT
(Dept. of Biological Engineering), MA, USA.
Tom has a special interest in projects where life sciences and computer programming meet. He
currently works as a senior scientist at the University of Tartu, Estonia. Majority of his work
is original computer programming and development of new computer algorithms related to the analysis
of large datasets. He does most of his programming in C/C++ but also uses Fortran, Basic, Perl and
other languages.
During his free time Tom enjoys nature photography, reading, hiking, skiing.
Tom is married and the proud father of a baby girl.
John Minnie, PhD - Project Manager
Dr. John Minnie received his Ph.D. in Space Physics in 2006 from the North-West University
in Potchefstroom, South Africa. He subsequently worked as a Limited-Term Researcher at the
Bartol Research Institute in Newark, Delaware (USA) from September 2005 to May 2007.
There he studied charged particle drift motions in turbulent magnetic fields.
John currently works as a software developer for Intergraph Corporation in Hampton, Virginia (USA).
He works with technologies such as the Component Object Model (COM) using Visual C++ and Visual
Basic, .NET, SQL databases and he designs software with the Unified Modeling Language (UML). In his
daily development activities he employs the Agile principles of Scrum, which allows explicitly for
more transparency when dealing with stakeholders and being able to adapt to changing software
requirements.
John is married and the father of a very active little boy.
